The 7th grade Academic Pursuit Team beat Lynhurst in a close match last night by a score of 22-20, taking the season record to 1-1. Alysa Hester, Brookelynne Rucker, and Lucy Griffith led all scorers.
Raising the Flag at the Administration Office
Thanks to our storm damage construction company, SCS, and one of their employees, Ronnie Romans, who with his Dad, also named Ronnie Romans, a US Army Chaplain, raised a new United States flag after replacement of the flag pole at the Administration offices. The original flag pole was destroyed by the tornado that severely damaged our high school in June.
Counselors Present at School Counselor Conference
Trudi Wolfe,
Melissa Keeley, and
Morgan Bastin, counselors at Central and South Grove, presented a break-out session at the Indiana School Counselor Association conference on November 14, 2019. They presented information about their work using the ACEs survey to provide trauma screenings to students in grades K-6. They also shared information about how to use this information to help teachers and principals support students who are most in need.
We love our counselors! Thank you for all you do for our students.
Thanks to Paige Anderson for taking the photos, pictured below, of our counselors at the conference.

Serving Families at the Ronald McDonald House
It was a privilege for several of our Administration Department staff (and, one of our wonderful BGHS students) to serve dinner to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Our Chartwells staff lovingly prepared the delicious food that was served at the House on Thursday, November 14. Thank you to our Chartwells staff: Dulcie Holcomb, Sandy Brewer, Melissa Schlicher, Sandy Parsley, and Heather Jarrett. Thank you to Administration staff: Steph Alford, Gay Osos, Cathy Statzer, Tom Keeley, and Melody Stevens. And, thanks to BGHS Freshman, Chase Alford.
Book Harvest at Central Elementary
PODEMOS means "We Can" in Spanish...and is the theme of our Hispanic family gatherings. Thanks to Ana Copenhaver for sending over these great photos of the November 18 dinner where the families enjoyed pie and a little celebration of the season. According to Mrs. Copenhaver, "the students and parents loved the sense of community and getting together. These monthly meetings are educational, informative, and super fun!"
From Mr. Beckley . . .
"For our ENL (English as a new language) classes, we are doing a unit called "We are what we eat." We've talked about marketing and food, as well as art and food, and we will be touching on topics such as food deserts, health, and food sustainability. In terms of culture, we are focusing on the fact that food is really what makes us who we are - it brings us together to the table, it's a social event, it's ingrained in our culture, and it's something we can all relate to no matter where we're from. Yesterday, Dulcie Holcomb, our Chartwells Food Service Director, and her staff prepared a variety of foods from several different cultures for our ENL2 students to taste and conducted a food demonstration on how to make these foods. Dulcie presented and made the bread in front of the students from a variety of cultures, including Naan from India, Injera from Ethiopia, Pan de Muertos from Mexico, Challah from Israel, and even Fry Bread from the Navajo Nation! The students were given the opportunity to eat the dishes in the ways that they were eaten in those specific cultures by tearing, dipping, grabbing, and sopping their way through the world. It was a phenomenal experience for our students, and we thank Chartwells for providing such an educational, unique, cultural, and fun experience for our kids!

Send Us Your Hornet Highlights!
We know there are many, many positive stories about Beech Grove City Schools involving our students, teachers, staff, and programs that we don't always hear. If you have a positive story to share, please send the details to
Melody Stevens, Community Relations/Communications Director, at
mstevens@bgcs.k12.in.us. We also encourage you to send stories that include personal achievements of your child such as: attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, performing in a community play, earning Girl Scout badges, serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, etc., etc. You might just see your story in a future edition of the "Hornet Blast" or in one of our local south side newspapers.
