August 15, 2019 - Celebrating and Informing our Hornets!

Thanks, American Legion!

Our Central Elementary Nurse, Stacey Writt, has a perfect view of Central Elementary's flag, which is visible from her clinic window. Stacey noticed the flag was beginning to look a little worn. She called one of her veteran friends to see how Central might obtain a new flag. He instructed her to contact the American Legion for replacement. And, the American Legion would arrange to have a Boy Scout troop dispose of the old flag properly. Ms. Jina Hackman, Central's Assistant Principal, contacted the American Legion and states: "Thank you to Mike Steigerwald from the Beech Grove American Legion Post!!! We requested a new US Flag and he responded the same day and let one of our third graders, Christian Lyle, assist with raising the new flag!" #kindnessmatters

You're the Best, Vinny!

Vinny Berberena, owner of Vinny's Barbershop, located at 312 Main Street in Beech Grove, was recognized by BGCS Superintendent, Dr. Paul Kaiser, at the August 13 School Board meeting. Dr. Kaiser presented Vinny with the district's "Something Extra" Award. Vinny provides free hair cuts for our students up to the age of 12 on the Sunday before school begins with his "Cuts for Kids" program. Vinny and his barbers volunteer their time on that Sunday, which is their only day off! Thank you for your kindness, Vinny! And, for helping our students to look their best as they start their school year! Fun fact: Vinny helps our superintendent to look his best, too - he is Dr. Kaiser's barber!

"Blue is the New Green" Program

Our South Grove and Hornet Park students learn about conserving energy!

The Indianapolis Colts are partnering with Citizens Energy Group to offer Blue's school show called "Blue Is The New Green." Thanks to Citizens Energy Group's generous commitment, this 30 minute program presents information about the importance of conserving energy.

Colts mascot Blue and his emcee treated our South Grove and Hornet Park students to an entertaining school show! With fun games and bright visuals, our students left the show with a clear message about going green! Thanks, Indianapolis Colts and Citizens Energy Group!

Send Us Your Hornet Highlights!

We know there are many, many positive stories about Beech Grove City Schools involving our students, teachers, staff, and programs that we don't always hear. If you have a positive story to share, please send the details to Melody Stevens, Community Relations/Communications Director, at mstevens@bgcs.k12.in.us. We also encourage you to send stories that include personal achievements of your child such as: attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, performing in a community play, earning Girl Scout badges, serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, etc., etc. You might just see your story in a future edition of the "Hornet Blast" or in one of our local south side newspapers. We want to celebrate our Hornets!
