School Board Corner: Saying 'thanks' to teachers and school volunteers
|
May 1-5 is Teacher Appreciation Week, and we want to express our profound thanks for each of our instructors. Our teachers' hard work, creativity and care are the building blocks of Henrico County Public Schools’ tradition of excellence.
In December, we recognized Shady Grove Elementary School's Crissy Lynn as the 2023 divisionwide Teacher of the Year. She was selected from five finalists from across Henrico County. Each HCPS school selects its own Teacher of the Year, and we're honored to help celebrate those phenomenal instructors at a special dinner, hosted by the Henrico Education Foundation. Watch our social media next week for slideshows of all the Teacher of the Year recipients for schools in each of Henrico’s five magisterial districts: Brookland (Monday), Fairfield (Tuesday), Three Chopt (Wednesday), Tuckahoe (Thursday) and Varina (Friday).
Thanks to all our teachers for your hard work each and every day. Your efforts empower students, serve Henrico families and strengthen our community.
Public School Volunteer Week is also in April, and we want to recognize our volunteers for their invaluable contributions to our educational environment. Volunteers mentor students, assist in the classroom, provide a safe campus presence as part of the Watch DOGS program and so much more. Thank you!

Update: New digs for ACE Center at Hermitage
|

|
|
|
Learn more about the new home for the Advanced Career Education Center at Hermitage, now under construction. The two-story structure adjacent to Hermitage High School will include state-of-the-art instructional spaces for the ACE Center’s many areas of focus — from medical careers to culinary studies. The light-filled building is slated for completion in 2024. Students at the ACE Center at Highland Springs will also enjoy a bright new environment soon; that center is currently under renovation.

May Family and Caregiver Series: Learn how to support your student's mental health
|
Join HCPS in recognizing and supporting the mental health and wellness needs of our students. The 2023 Family and Caregiver Series features a workshop each Wednesday in May. Join us in person, or virtually at https://tinyurl.com/HCPSMentalHealthSeries. All workshops are from 6-7 p.m.:
- Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth: The Caregiver Perspective (May 3 at the Oak Avenue Complex).
- Grief and Loss: How Caregivers can Provide Support (May 10 at Tuckahoe Area Library).
- Ending the Silence: Recognizing the Warning Signs of Suicide and Poor Mental Health (May 17 at Twin Hickory Area Library).
- Anxiety and School Refusal: How Parents, Caregivers and Educators Can Help (May 24 at Fairfield Area Library).
School counselors: HCPS' licensed and trained school counselors are an important mental health resource. They provide school counseling and services to support students' academic achievement, social and emotional development, and college- and career-readiness. They also foster mental health awareness and provide short-term intervention, as well as crisis and referral services to students and their families.

- The HCPS ARTS Festival returns this weekend! Come to Highland Springs H.S. on April 29 and 30 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and be wowed by student artwork from across Henrico County. Barring rain, the VMFA Artmobile will be there all day Saturday. 200 S. Airport Drive, Highland Springs, Va.
- Join the HCPS team: There are three opportunities in May to kickstart your career by joining the team at Henrico County Public Schools:
- HCPS Job Fair: May 2 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Tuckahoe Area Library, 1901 Starling Drive, Henrico, Va.
- HCPS “Drive the Bus” Event (sign up for this transportation job fair): May 6 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Glen Allen H.S. (weather permitting), 10700 Staples Mill Road, Glen Allen, Va.
- School Nutrition Services Job Fair: May 16 from 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. at Glen Allen Branch Library, 10501 Staples Mill Road, Glen Allen, Va.
- Disability Inclusion Day at the Diamond: Get free tickets to the Flying Squirrels' May 21 afternoon game against Akron. HCPS is a sponsor of this event highlighting disability inclusion and mental health.

School libraries are at the heart of learning

April is School Library Month! HCPS libraries help create equity and prepare students for college, careers and life. School librarians impact instruction in every content area and grade level. This week, HCPS Library Services celebrated its award-winning librarians for 2023. Pictured are Kendall Dunaway of George Moody M.S., Secondary Librarian of the Year; Amy Coward of Greenwood E.S., Virginia Association of School Librarians James Region Librarian of the Year; and Lisa Blouch of Shady Grove E.S., Elementary Librarian of the Year. This year's Ann M. Martin Learning for Life School Librarians' Scholarship went to Deep Run H.S. senior Katherine Ogilvie, one of the school's most engaged library users.

Registration underway for Summer Academy
|
|
|
HCPS Summer Academy is a unique program that gives elementary, middle and high school students important opportunities for enrichment, credit-recovery and remediation. The 2023 edition will be held at 26 HCPS sites: 11 elementary schools, seven middle schools and eight high schools, along with online summer instruction for Henrico Virtual Academy students.

Kindergarten: Register now for the fall
|
|
|
Registration is now open for Henrico families who wish to enroll kindergarten students for the 2023-24 school year! There are two ways to complete the initial kindergarten registration process: by completing the online PowerSchool Enrollment form or by calling the child’s school and making an appointment with the registrar for an in-person meeting. The online PowerSchool Enrollment process is strongly encouraged. To register, your child must live in Henrico County and be age 5 by Sept. 30.

HCPS Bridge Builders Academy spring workshops are here!
- Navigating Housing Resources in Henrico County: May 2 at 6 p.m., Oak Avenue Complex. The Henrico County Department of Community Revitalization supports families experiencing housing challenges such as inadequate living conditions, home repairs, down payments and housing discrimination. Join this session to learn about resources to support Henrico County families.
- Show Me What You Mean: May 18 at 11 a.m. (virtual). Some students need visual cues and reminders to be their best. Create a visual schedule for your student, and learn how, when and where to place visual aids at home and in our community. Interested in participating? Email to receive a free activity kit and the event link.
- Engaging Your Child During the Summer: June 6 at 6 p.m. (virtual). HCPS' Family Resource Center visits local communities throughout the summer to connect and engage with families. Learn about the free, fun and educational engagement opportunities that will be hosted by the Division of Family and Community Engagement. Join the session here.

HCPS is a top community for music education: For 24 years, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has recognized places and organizations for their extraordinary commitment to music education. Henrico County Public Schools has been on that elite list every year, including the 2023 group of honorees, announced last week. Thanks to HCPS students, teachers, families, administrators and the school board for this unflagging commitment to arts education!
